Principal Investigator

Leopoldo Palma

After studying Microbiology in Argentina, I completed a PhD in Biotechnology at the Public University of Navarre (Spain), where I focused on Bacillus thuringiensis insecticidal proteins and their application in sustainable pest control. Since then, my research has expanded to include entomopathogenic bacteria and nematodes, integrating microbiology, genomics, and bioinformatics to discover and characterize novel pesticidal proteins and microbial metabolites. I’ve held academic and research positions in Argentina (CONICET & UNVM) and currently work as a Ramón y Cajal researcher at the University of Valencia, where I also teach within the Department of Genetics while conducting research at the BIOTECMED Institute. My work bridges fundamental and applied research and includes collaboration with agri-biotech companies in Europe and South America.

I have authored over 30 peer-reviewed publications and contributed as Principal Investigator to several research projects. Recent studies in the CBP group explore the genomic potential of native strains of Bacillus, Photorhabdus, and Xenorhabdus. Alongside my research and teaching activities, I am an active reviewer, editor, and evaluator for scientific journals and funding agencies. Since 2021, I have also been a member of the Bacterial Pesticidal Protein Resource Center (BPPRC), contributing to the official classification of pesticidal proteins.
