Post-doctoral Researcher

María Lázaro Berenguer

During her Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology, obtained in 2017 from the University of Valencia, she joined the Biotechnological Pest Control (CBP) group, where she investigated the insecticidal spectrum of Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) strains. She subsequently completed a Master’s in Plant Molecular and Cellular Biotechnology at the IBMCP (CSIC-UPV, Valencia), focusing on Arabidopsis thaliana TCP transcription factors involved in the regulation of flowering time and branching.
In 2019, she returned to the CBP lab to pursue her PhD under the supervision of Dr. Juan Ferré and Dr. Patricia Hernández-Martínez, supported by an ACIF fellowship from Generalitat Valenciana. Her doctoral research centered on elucidating the mode of action of Bt Vip insecticidal proteins, with emphasis on their structure–function relationships,

binding site characterization, and toxicity in lepidopteran pests. In 2022, she conducted a research stay in Dr. Colin Berry’s lab at Cardiff University (UK), funded by a BEFPI fellowship from Generalitat Valenciana, where she explored Vip–lipid interactions and gained experience in structural biology. Throughout her PhD, she strengthened her expertise in protein biochemistry, membrane–protein interactions, and molecular biology. She completed her PhD thesis in June 2025 and currently collaborates with BASF Agricultural Solutions (Belgium) on a project investigating the binding interactions of novel insecticidal proteins, while seeking postdoctoral opportunities to expand her knowledge in structural biology and contribute to the development of innovative pest control strategies.
